Strike15 is a companion for quiet moments.
Its bold minimalism brings a unique, witty and warm essence to space for reading, working or mood lighting.

PROCESS
During early discussions and sketching, we aspired to create a piece playing with the scale of everyday objects alongside balance-based motion.
We decided on balance since we felt it created a calming, almost meditative effect. The ceremonial ritual of striking a match seemed to satisfy both of these goals in addition to being very charming to us.
We were excited at the idea of creating a "magic" effect with our light by hiding all wiring and bulbs so that it felt as though the bulb simply lit on its own.

Early prototypes informed our understanding of how to lamp might be adjusted. We settled on a 180 rotation, but had to tackle how to keep the lamp where you place it. This was solved by introducing a counterweight and friction fit limiters.

MECHANICS & MANUFACTURING

Although it took a lot of time, stress and precision, the veneering process was immensely satisfying and created the effect of bent solid wood that we were looking for.
This was just one example of the endless list of new skills and processes that I learned in the creation of this piece.

Strike15 was designed with manufacturing processing in mind.
Primarily, the body can be made quickly using bent wood lamination through vacuum forming and veneering.
3D printed elements like the limiters and bulb can be produced cheaply and with minimal labour using both nylon and resin filaments.

At the time of creation, both my co-designer and I were very new to soldering. Through this experience, we gained a new tool and learned how to create a circuit within a design piece.
