Experimental outdoor climbing pack made entirely from upcycled car airbags.
Designed using digital pattern drafting technologies.

Modelling the pack gave us a quick understanding of scale, proportions and aesthetics. With each iteration, we made small adjustments, but formally, the pack stayed quite similar for the majority of the process.

PROCESS
The initial concept was developed to be simple, versatile and most importantly, fit extra big waterbottles. Through quick and casual sketches, combined with some evaluation of current climbing pack construction, we came up with something we were excited about.

The first iteration of the pack gave us a good idea of our order of construction, where problems might arise in seams and a sense of scale. Following that, we made a paper model to work out where features might sit and start to pattern out straps, zippers, and darts.
Between prototypes we made a quick digitally embroidered patch to brand the bags. Icehog is Jose's nickname for me based on my childhood hockey team.
The second iteration of the pack gave us a chance to start playing with the airbag material and make it wearable to test fit and function.

Between iterations we took the bag out to Squamish for a quick test run, which gave us lots of feedback on how the backpack performs and what tweaks we could make for the final prototype.
